+1 SANDWICH +1 LOOK BACK AT THE SCHOOL YEAR

Through our +1 sandwich project, and with the help of Bike Maffia volunteers and students, homeless people received fresh and tasty sandwiches every day between 1 Nov 2018 – 31 May 2019. The numbers of the school year 2018 speak for themselves: 32,942 pieces of sandwich, 742 kg of fruits, 602 kg of non-perishable food, 12L soda, and 60 pieces of soap, handmade by a mom of a student participating in the +1 project, for those in need.

A total of 41 schools are participating in the program now, and some of them even deliver the food to the shelters themselves – special thanks to them! (Közép-budai Waldorf Iskola, Gustave Eiffel Francia Óvoda, Általános Iskola és Gimnázium, Derkovits Gyula Általános Iskola, Budapesti Eötvös József Gimnázium)

There is a company now as well, the first one joining the +1 sandwich program – Process Solutions Kft. – which shows that we are heading in a good direction, and good examples find followers easily.

We are thankful to the parents, students, teachers and the volunteers of BBM for their enthusiasm. We are leaving behind a year full of work and joy, and we can barely wait for the new school year to start! But until then, let’s all have a lovely holiday!

TEAM BUILDING WITH BUTTER KNIFE AND ALUMINIUM FOIL

We put a tremendous amount of energy into organizing the Charity Fest, then we relaxed a bit, but now we are back to pick up on our projects.

This time we were on a team building with the employees of Mazars Kft. at Kőleves.

We held an interactive presentation, where we introduced BBM’s mission, and had a conversation about prejudices, and why it is important to go beyond our limits. After that, we had some fun during a round of pub quiz and sandwich making.

We had our hands full with making 220 sandwiches, some of those sandwiches we delivered directly to people in need, and the rest went to a homeless shelter, thanks to the volunteer food saver group Sürgősségi Ételmentő – Emergency Foodsavers

Big thanks to Kőleves and the team from Mazars Kft. for the cooperation – this was our first time, but surely not the last!

If you would like to join us for a team building, please contact: csapatepites@bikemaffia.com

TEAM BUILDING

What do the following companies have in common?

  • Cardif
  • Decathlon
  • Emarsys
  • Erste Bank
  • GE
  • ING
  • Process Solutions

They have all applied to and participated in Bike Maffia’s team building experience! During the last few months, teams of the companies listed above arrived one by one to Dürer Kert, where, after sensitizing lectures and discussions they have started community cooking. In total 478 sandwiches and 415 hot meals were offered to homeless people, serving 893 people in need with tasty and nutritious food.

And what are the differences between the companies?

There are some, who return to us frequently for years, some who came for the first time. And how does it feel like to participate first? Please find a report below:

“I would like to thank you again for the program yesterday. It was a fantastic afternoon, joy to help and listen to your lectures! Every single feedback was positive! There were some, saying they weren’t sure what to expect, when they first heard about the program, therefore they weren’t too enthusiastic but enjoyed themselves above their expectations. Your approach and professionalism was not a question :)” – Cardif

We would like to thank the sympathy of your colleagues and the Food Saving Project Team for the delivery of the portions to homeless shelters.

+1 SANDWICH – BECAUSE A LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY

Students and parents participating in our project have not been idle in the past weeks: they have collected 7,345 sandwiches, 168 kg of fruit, and 115 kg of non-perishable food for the people in need.

This will mean plenty of healthy breakfasts and dinners, and for some people: it is the only guarantee of their survival!

Giving to others enriches us, every time, but this time we have also received positive feedback, from Nóra, one of the Moms involved in the +1 sandwich project:

“The underlying, ‘a little goes a long way’ philosophy of the +1 SANDWICH project is just lovely. It is also very true, for other areas of life as well. We cannot and we should not do everything alone – together we can achieve more! Whether it is a work or school task or moving, cooking … anything. I also think it very important to have my child realize the importance and the need of helping others.”

Interested? If so, contact us at eloadas@bikemaffia.com and our volunteer presenters can visit your school too.

We hold an interactive presentation where we discuss prejudice, homelessness, and where you can also learn about BBM projects and how you might join them.

THANK YOU, BUDAPEST BIKE MAFFIA!

We received a really heart-warming piece of feedback about our “Seeds 4 Hope” project this week. A social worker, who is one of the local coordinators of the project, and a resident of the shelter who participates in the project, told us about their experience:

We are very glad that we have been given the opportunity to participate in Budapest Bike Maffia’s Seeds 4 Hope project, which lets people living here do some gardening. I think this method you introduced us to is very smart. Our Gardening Club came to life thanks to your help and it is a useful activity for people living here. We would like to use vegetables grown by the Gardening Club in our Cooking Club so that we can include more residents in these useful past-time activities. These activities can bring people together, and the time they spend together makes allows them to get to know and accept each other. We had a really good time while working together. We water the plants regularly and the seeds are already waking up. We follow it every day. We have bought a watering gun that makes watering easier. I would like to thank you, also on the behalf of the club members. We are looking forward to continuing our cooperation. Thank you Budapest Bike Maffia, on behalf of the residents and employees of the Madrid temporary shelter of the Hungarian Red Cross

By Lászlóné Püski, case managing social worker, Hungarian Red Cross Budapest Division

Csaba Szöllősi, member of the Gradening Club speaks about the cooperation:

How did you like setting up the garden?

It was a fantastic experience to be a member of an enthusiastic team. It was a real recharging of batteries.

What was the most difficult and the easiest task?

There were no difficult tasks because we split the work. Time just flew by and it was a nice pastime.

What did you like the most?

The fact the volunteers and hard-working team members came from a wide variety of places. We could work together by helping each other. The work was well-organized and the atmosphere was excellent.

How do you think of the project as a whole? Are you looking forward to planting in May?

I like the project and I look forward to the coming stages. I’ll be sure to participate in planting in May, which, as far as I know, will be combined with a community cooking. The atmosphere will surely be good.

How do you plan on tending the garden?

On a voluntary basis, regularly, every day, and to the best of our knowledge.

IF IT’S MONDAY, IT’S VITAMIN COMMANDO TIME!

What about Thursdays? – Same!

For many, these two days mean the certainty of getting a nutritious meal, because on these two days, members of the Commando bring sandwiches made at the Budapest Bike Maffia HQ to the homeless people living in the streets. In January, a sum of 1,993 sandwiches, more than 10 kilograms of fruit, and 150 blankets were delivered to those living in the streets and to night shelters and temporary accommodation shelters. While collecting blankets, we received a great deal of help from Biokeverékek Webshop, who will continue helping those in need by collecting vitamins during the month of February. We would like to seize this opportunity to thank the volunteers for their contribution to making and delivering the sandwiches.

Would you like to join the Vitamin Commando?

We await all those who are willing to help on Mondays and Thursdays at 6PM at the Bike Maffia headquarters: 1145 Budapest, Bosnyák utca 7/b – AZTA Közösségi Kézműves és Barkácsműhely

It goes without saying that these students have passed the exam of solidarity and love with flying colors!

FOOD SAVING=LIFE SAVING

Budapest Bike Maffia delivered 6500 portions of hot meal, sandwiches, cold cuts, party food, pastries equivalent to 5500 portions, and 1000 portions of dessert to people in need and homeless via “Ételmentés” Food saving project in 2018. It was not by chance that multinational companies, long-established Hungarian companies, and famous restaurants have joined us last year. This project is not only about making their surplus food to serve a useful aim but representing the idea of a common, liveable future. It is very important to reduce waste, to drive attention to joint social responsibility, and to do good with those, for whom a portion of hot meal can be life-saving.
